Venue: National Physical Laboratory (NPL)

The 2025 Particle Minibeam Therapy (PMBT) Workshop will be held at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, London, the UK’s leading centre for metrology and scientific research.

About NPL: Founded in 1900, NPL is the UK’s National Metrology Institute and a public corporation owned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). As a global leader in measurement science, NPL supports groundbreaking research across multiple disciplines, with its main campus located in Teddington. NPL also has additional locations in Strathclyde, Surrey, Cambridge, Huddersfield, and Solihull. The laboratory works in strategic partnership with DSIT, the University of Surrey, and The University of Strathclyde.

At NPL, over 800 scientists bring a wealth of expertise, driving innovation in areas ranging from healthcare and energy to environmental monitoring and advanced manufacturing.

NPL’s Radiotherapy Expertise: NPL has been at the forefront of radiotherapy safety and standards for decades, playing a critical role in advancing the accuracy of cancer treatments. With radiotherapy being a vital component in treating more than 50% of cancer patients, the need for reliable, traceable dosimetry standards is essential.

NPL supports clinical practice through its provision of primary standards and collaboration with organisations such as the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) to develop dosimetry codes of practice. NPL’s expertise extends to cutting-edge modalities such as proton therapy and electronic brachytherapy, helping clinics implement new techniques safely and effectively.

As radiotherapy technology evolves, with more precise treatments targeting smaller, mobile tumours, NPL continues to lead the way in training medical physicists, ensuring uniform high standards in treatment delivery across the UK. Their role in end-to-end verification ensures that every step, from imaging to treatment, is rigorously assessed to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
